Best Hammock Fabric?

#1

Post by PREACHER » Fri Nov 20, 2015 3:57 pm

I am about to DIY another hammock, (Yes, I will do it the "right" way this time, for all of you who know why I need to make another one) and wanted to discuss fabric options.

What do you prefer and why?

Now as for recommending something more to my tastes... I'm 180 lbs, but often have a 35lb dog w me, so I am at 215 minimum weight. I know that puts me within the range of 1.0 oz fabrics, but the one I have tried (hyperD) was a little too stretchy and thin for my liking.

I like the 1.6 hyperD, and am leaning towards that because of the increased abrasion resistance (my dog has nails) and less stretch. Also I like the colors. :)

I had a great discussion w Scuba regarding some of dutch's fabrics so I am looking forward to his opinion here. I looked at dutch's website and every fabric seems to say "it has a great handfeel" but does no actual comparison between the diff fabrics he carries.

Thanks!

I've always been a fan of the 1.1 Marpat sold by DIY Gear Supply based on price and width of fabric. The website says 64" wide, but it runs up to 68".

FWIW, I weigh 215, have used the Big Green Weenie ( a 12' gathered end) for three years with no problem---and for almost two of those years it was my every night sleeper.

Best feel IMHO is argon or Dutch's Hexon 1.1. Just remember as the fabric gets lighter, stretch increases. RBTR's Hex 2.2 while heavier, has a decent feel to it, very little stretch, and is bombproof. Papa Smurf was telling me how his son was scratching a sample of it with an upholstery needle used for splicing and it had no ill effects. I think with most fabrics like HyperD, PolyD, Hexon and Argon, a middle of the road weight is the way to go.

It's hard to go wrong with a 1.9/70d ripstop too. The stuff from RBTR is nice and soft, plenty strong for your application, less than $4 per yard and there's a bunch of colors. You're going to want to watch the dog claws with any of these fabrics but I would steer away from the 1.0/1.1 weight fabrics. The HD1.6 or the 1.9 will work for you, although it sounds like the 2.2 might be the way to go with the dog.

+1 on the Hex 2.2. That's why I went with it for my Sparrow.

Actually, with the puppy dog toes coming into play, we might want to be looking at an abrasion resistant fabric like Epsilon.

This is a great deal:

If this is the same stuff I've been getting (ts from the same vendor), the blemish is a printing error at the edge of the fabric. That's enough for an 11 foot hammock with another yard left over.

If you don't want it, let me know and I'll grab it up.

well, I should mention that the dog goes on top of, or in my sleeping bag. If it's hot enough to not have a lot of top insulation, it's too hot to let her sleep w me.
And weight is a small factor... so I am leaning towards sticking w the 1.6 then?

The 1.6 HyperD is awesome. If I wasn't such a gram weenie I'd be in the HyperD XL. I'm using RBTRs new XL 1.1 right now, but hyperD feels better on the skin.

I too like the XL, but I will be trying another whipped hammock, whipped in a way that allows for a longer ridgeline, thus reducing the need for an extreme diagonal... So, I think I too will save weight and go w regular width.
I am basically going to rebuild what I already had I guess... Just not take the shortcuts that end up putting me on the ground this time.

I just got and 11' Hexon 1.6 hammock from Dutch and it's super soft compared to my other hammocks. I'm planning on a hexon 1.0 replacement for my summer hammock w/ built-in bugnet. It seems like there's a new fabric coming out every week, so It's tough to keep track of what's available.
