Southern Regional Hang

#1

Post by sarge » Sat Jun 04, 2016 12:25 pm

Hey guys. Looking for input and suggestions for a Southern Regional Hang. Something that would draw folks from TX, AR, LA, MS, GA, FL, TN, NC, SC, etc. Looking at the map, a location convenient to all those states looks to be in northern AL/MS. We'd be looking for a location, either National Forest or State Park and some local folks to coordinate securing the site amd local logistics. If the idea works for you, we could set up a planning and discussion page to nail down dates, locations, and critical personnel.

OK---its looking like we're getting interest from other sites as well. I've set up a discussion Group so we don't monopolize any one group and so folks from all the States can coordinate and discuss: https://www.facebook.com/groups/253534368343743/

I am going to move this to the southern region forum, but leave a ghost here

Regarding Mammoth Cave National Park:

Ok, so I finally got a return call today after leaving two voicemails. The ranger I spoke with would not give me her name, but was very supportive and helpful.

Questions asked:

Are hammocks allowed in the park?

Yes, with tree friendly suspension. She had an ENO and she said things like the Atlas straps are fine. I told her we use minimum 1" webbing.

What is the busy season?

Memorial day-Labor day, but things die down for the first few weeks of June after memorial day.

We are expecting anywhere from 50-150 people. Can the park accomadate these numbers? Which site would you recommend?

Yes the park can accomodate those numbers by sharing sites. The campgrounds close to the HQ are $20/night with 8 people per site and full amenities.

Her recomendation was for the Maple Springs grounds which are park primitive meaning they have a water spigot and chemical toilet. They are $30/night with 24 per site w/ 6 sites available. Does have car access.

Are there any insurance requirements for group events?

None that she was aware of.

* She said the farthest out they reserve sites is 6 months in advance so get a jump when we know what dates we want.

If anyone thinks of any questions the park number is 270-758-2424 and someone will answer it 9a-5p local time (Good luck with that!)

Wow, the Mammoth Cave National Park looks really cool. It is 1,000+ miles from my location, but I have to drive to hang nearly anywhere...

Crapatalk won't let me see dates of these posts for some reason. Has this taken place yet?

Nope. We're still in the planning stages.
