Mora knives !!! Question.

#1

Post by rich424 » Wed Dec 28, 2016 11:40 pm

Well I received 2 for Christmas. One is a Robust / Carbon and the other a Companion /stainless. I was under the impression that the sheaths would have the same attachments. I've seen where 2 knives kinda "piggback" and really like the option to do so.
Both knives were ordered from Amazon. Check out the pics and let me know. ImageImageImageImage

I believe you can hang the companion on the robust, but not the other way around. If you file down the spine of the robust it will really throw some sparks off a fire steel. Took me about 20 minutes to put a nice flat spine on the robust and it's a killer backpacking knife at 4.5 oz.

Sharp spine also works great for getting wood shavings for tinder. There are a lot of beautiful knives out there, but for $15 that Robust is hard to beat. It's WAY nicer than it should be for the price.

I've had a carbon companion for a while. It's a great knife. Filed down the spine near the handle similar to Idaho Hanger's recommendation. I've got a few other knives now, and rotate them out but I still come back to the Mora. Also, I've battoned with mine a number of times. It's not recommended, but I did it anyway. As long as you don't over do it, I think you're fine.

Enjoy the knives, they look great.

Can y'all show some pics of these 'filed down spines' of which you speak?

Just grab a bastard file, clamp your blade so that the back of it is exposed about 1/8 to 1/4" in a vise, and just run several strokes across it. Give it a test scratch on your ferro rod, and see if it will throw sparks, if not, repeat. I did the same to mine, but I'm at work...so sorry no picture.
