99% of my experience are sit on top as well. If I dump I flip the kayak back over and climb back in.(Which in and of itself takes practice as well)

ditto. Never learned to roll, probably never will. The only places I go over is in a large rapid, or in the surf. swells and small stuff has never caused me any problems.
Texas sucede? Y'all are lucky we don't invade!

Glad things are rolling along on this post. I don't think I will be bringing my kayaks to the fall hang this year as they just sat on the trailer last year :) The Spring hang however... YAK YAK YAK YAK

The year before last we paddled some but IIRC the weather was a deterrent last year. We'll make that call on ours when it gets closer.

It did seem from an activity standpoint that any paddling was best done before Saturday.

I'll have my 'yak at the Fall Hang, but the only thing I'll catch is a good time chauffeuring Max around

Dang that reminds me, I have got to get my Lab (duck dog and I do a LOT of hunting from my kayak and sneak boat) kayak steady while the water is still warm......

Here's my Perception Carolina 12. I purchased it sometime around 2009 and really put it thru the wringer. I really like the size of this one. Did fine on the great lakes, yet easy to manage in small rivers and creeks. At about 49lb, portaging isn't too bad depending on the distance.

The Perceptions are made just up the road from me, but I've never been in one. I'm partial to my Jacksons.

Any feedback or recommendations for a 280lb guy who will mainly be using it in lakes and rivers around east Texas?

Rent before you buy, no matter the recommendation. Find out what you want to do with your yak and how you may use it. I have a sit on top, but love to do some white water...adjustable but tough. Great for fishing, very bad for white water depending on the river.
Any day in the outdoors is better than a day at work.
