March 4-6 Hike and/or Kayak, Hurricane Cove, LSHT

#1

Post by Scuba » Tue Jan 26, 2016 10:39 pm

Gonna do a weekend at Hurricane Cove which is 0.6 m N/NE of PL#6 of the LSHT on the banks of Lake Conroe. Because it is such a short hike in, this could be considered a semi car camping trip (people have hiked in a bucket of chicken and Dr.Peppers in the past). If I kayak in like I want to, I will throw a cooler on the back and my dog and pack on the front and paddle in.

As we will be right on the shore of the lake, mosquito netting is highly advised. Fishing is ok here and there is plenty of deadfall nearby for fires. The camping here is fantastic, hanging within feet of the shore and the sunrise on the water is spectacular. Come on out if you are able.

I was there last weekend and the firewood is getting pretty slim. There were 4 groups of people camping out there too so I'm guessing it's been getting more crowded lately.

I've got a rock climbing trip with work that weekend so I can't make it out. Y'all have fun though.

I have something else scheduled for that weekend but if it falls through I would like to join y'all. Sounds like fun. Might consider paddling in to have the kayak or canoe there to improve fishing and haul more unnecessary but fun gear etc. Hopefully do a day hike if time permits. If I'm super lucky get there early and claim some territory ;-). Plant flags and all that... I mean set up 4-5 cheap tarps... arr arr. Probably not shoot off too many AR rounds... ha ha ha But I was super lucky and found some .22 magnum WMR at Walmart yesterday, surprised the socks off me, and 525 boxes of .22lr the super cheap Rem golden bullets... fun to plink with. Child comes out in me. :-) Love those "rimfire" light weight "survival" firearms.

My son and I camped about a mile from there this weekend. So we went and checked it out, and wood is plenty and someone must have been there recently and cleaned the whole area up, it looks good. The last time we were there it was pretty nasty but looks good now..Hopefully will have all my gear for this trip.

Scubes;

This will be of interest to you and anyone coming in from the west. The Grand Parkway toll road is now open from 290 to I45. I don't know how much the toll is, but you can now go from I10 at Katy over to I45 in the Woodlands without going thru the city:

Just bumping this to keep it relevant.

You dont have to have a kayak to come, PL#6 is .6 miles from hurricane cove and is a good place to stage hikes from.

If you need a boat, I will probably have one spare.

where would you launch a boat from? or do you just portage that mile? Wife will be a couple of days post surg, so I likely can't make the trip. but it looks like fun for later.

you can either portage the .6 mile or paddle in from near where the bridge is east of PL#6. That paddle is a couple miles i think.

There is a slight chance I can make the 4th, leaving before dark on 5th. I won't know until time to go probably. If I come I would kayak in. no reservations needed, correct?

While I've not paddled to Hurricane Cove, I know that there's a launch point at Stubblefield as well as the bridge mentioned in a prior post. I suppose one could also zoom in and find some launch points across the lake as well.

For those who have not been there before, "Hurricane Cove" is that area 0.6 miles North East of Trail Head 6 parking lot at the point where the LSHT makes a 90* turn to the NW.
