What's the contingency if Neiderhoffer is closed?

Pretty sure we have it reserved. Is there some controlled burning or some other forest closing event going on in the near future???

Yeah Cheryl reserved it, but someone posted a picture on Facebook that they took showing signs saying it is closed until further notice and they had game cameras monitoring.

We are hoping that the pic was a hoax. Tom is calling in the morning on Monday. If for some unknown reason it is closed we will find another spot like maybe PL8. But until we know more the plan stays the same.

The traditional Butt Bake was Friday night camping at Parking Lot #8 and a Saturday hike and camp to Hidden Lake (about 2 miles). So we could do that.

Or we could just stay at Parking Lot #8.

Or we could hike the LST to Niederhoffer. Remember, the permit is for vehicle access to the lake, not for camping there. If you hike in, you can camp anywhere in the National Forest. Its 4.2 miles from PL8, but we could cut more than a mile off of that by shuttling folks over to the road crossing at Mile Marker +/- 16.

Hiking to either location means no dutch ovens, pop ups, and camp chairs. Staying at PL#8 means no swimming.

So, hang out at PL 8 with all the food but no swimming, or go light and sit in our hammocks and eat Freezer bag meals after a swim.

I'm not sure the hike to hidden lake has ever been done in 2 miles. Not saying that it's farther than that, just never been done in only 2 miles.[FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND TIGHTLY-CLOSED EYES]

You gotta follow the secret route. Last time you were with me I followed the secret route.

But then there was that deviation---------

I plan to bring some of my DIY supplies that I am not using or have any immediate plans for for people to pick through, no charge. Just an idea, but if anyone else might want to, it might be a good way of getting some inspiration or just getting rid of stuff taking up space. I have too many cord locks and bits of fabric, insulation that I have no use for. Could be like a little trunk swap and shop when we all leave on Sunday.
That's a good idea, I have piles of crap I have tried to start.

Regarding getting up at 4 on Friday,

I will be getting late Thursday night to parking lot #4, and will spend the night there, likely. If you're game to try hiking in to this place Friday Morning, we can do that, toss whoever has a vehicle out of their hammock to give us a ride back to our vehicles to haul in the rest of the gear. Just a thought, SMK,

Anyone drink folgers from the metal can? If so I need someone to bring a metal coffee can to the butt bake.

Is there another water option? And, we certainly need the iron cooking option. Hurricane Cove? I trust that you guys will work it out, just let me know before I start that drive, lol.

We should know something later today. Hurricane Cove is always an option. We do have a wagon that could be pulled down there.

The Butt Bake will return to it's roots, and be held at PL 8. Unfortunately the USFS has contracted to have the road into Neiderhoffer repaired. It was supposed to be finished by July 11, but the contractor has set it back 3 or more weeks. This means we can not use Neiderhoffer, but the good new is next year the road in won't suck so much :)

In light of the above, we will be returning the Butt Bake to PL8. This means PURE car camping with optional day hikes. This means no lounging in the lake, BUT bring water guns and fans...and lots of batteries. This means, bring LOTS of water.

We are still having fun. Still having a great door prize drawing. Still having awesome meals. We might schedule some day trips to other spots for a swim :) .

Yes it is going to be hotter but we are still going to make every effort to make this an awesome hang. Feel free to start the flaming now.
