VIDEO: The Vining Hammock Pack

#1

Post by sarge » Wed Jan 06, 2016 4:22 pm

This video shows the pack I designed specifically for hammock camping. It is, to my knowledge, currently the only pack designed specifcally for that purpose. I had it made by Chris Zimmer at Zimmerbuilt: http://www.zimmerbuilt.com/

Here are some additional pictures I took three years ago when I received the pack:

Buckle at the roll top closure:

Buckle at hip belt pockets:

Shoulder straps:

Padding and mesh at the hip belt and back of pack:

Mesh side pocket for tarp stowage:

Main compartment:

Packed and ready to go for its first field test. At the time I was using a Hennesy Deep Jungle XL, Hennessy Hex tarp, Ray Jardine top quilt, and AHE Potomac UQ:

I also used a Mystery Ranch Wet Pack, now replaced with a more adaptable Ribz Pack:

Shots of Scout The Wonder Dog in these pics makes me kind of misty eyed:

Great post. Although I didn't see any gators I'm betting there were some reasonably close by. I really loved seeing Scout! The pack is okay too.

Yah. The Bowdine is a modification of my original design, and the way I'd do it if I had to do it all over again. When I first started talking with Chris, I had no idea how much room I'd need in each pocket. I really wanted bottle pockets but didn't want to take the chance that they'd take up room that I'd need for the hammock and tarp. Turns out I needn't have been so concerned. The Deep Jungle is a big, bulky hammock, and I still ended up with about 5" pf room at the top once it was stuffed in. IIRC, Bowdine was a guy who commented on the original thread about this pack (on another site behind a pay wall), and I told him that he'd have room for the bottles if he wanted them.

I really like that pack.

I've been considering contacting Chris about one of these packs for about a year now. After watching your video and seeing the pics, I've finally decided to pull the trigger. Now I just have to wait for him to finish it. :)

Yes, the Bowdine, with a couple of other extras like a zippered stash pocket for my wallet & keys. I like being able to reach and drink my water without having to take the pack off.

Yah. If I had it to do all over again, that's what I'd do.

I think you're going to like the pack, as well as dealing with Chris.
