I use can's too, most good piston guns have multiple settings, to allow a can to function to it's full potential. For example, on my SCARs, there are 3 piston settings. One setting just allows the gun to shoot without even enough gas to cycle the bolt, second is standard operation, 3rd is suppressed.

Maybe I was given bad info, I was led to believe you get a good pop from the piston gas relief.

as long as you adjust the gas regulator on the rifle and use a decent and CORRECTLY sized can you are good to go. An adjustable gas block DI rifle vs a properly adjusted piston rifle.... it's a wash. Now, If i don't adjust the piston, yeah, you'll hear a nice pop.
