Drinking water from mud-holes and scum ponds?

For those of us that camp in places other than along clear running mountain streams...

Does anyone have any simple, tested, effective method to deal with drinking water when the only option is a mud-hole or scum pond? How much does it help to filter the water through a cotton bandanna, ripstop nylon, or other cloth? What about a drip coffee filter?

Whether a filter or a chemical, the final treatment for water will work better if the worst of the crud is removed.

I've filtered through a bandana a few times and it definitely can help.
I don't think any of that is necessary with the MSR Guardian.

+1 on the MSR Guardian, especially now that I have the universal bottle cap fitted to it

I carry a Smart Water bottle cut to the length of my Sawyer mini and carry the filter and bag inside, then I put a knee high nylon sock over the whole thing to keep things inside. When I filter, I use the cut off bottle to gather water from funky streams and pools, and place the knee high sock over it as a pre-filter and take it off before I pour the water into the filter bag. My drinking water bottle is one of these.

It serves no useful purpose as a filter for bacteria and nasties, but it does make the water taste a lot less like it was filtered through a full diaper, and if I can't see the water I can make believe it isn't colored by tannins.

My plan is similar to this. I just wondered if someone found a filter media that worked better than some randomly selected fabric.

Well, I didn't select it randomly. It was carefully considered for its multi-use and pre-filter capabilities. I had previously owned a Steri-Pen which came with a pre-filter and noticed that it was merely a fine mesh, so I knew that's all I would need. Since I also needed a stuff sack for my filtration set-up, it was kind of a no-brainer that a knee high nylon sock was both bag shaped and a fine mesh, especialy seeing as how I was already using them to brew gourmet coffee in the field.

I always carried a pair of pantyhose with me in the military, both for silt filtering and they feel good on my legs :)

You canalso use them to make a wetsuit slide on easier, photos still not required. Do they work for bugs?
