I prefer 3/4 to Full for myself due to my height and weight. Combined with taking on the weight of a pack I want as much ankle support as I can comfortably have. Even when we hike on well beaten trails I like to go off trail and do not want to roll an ankle miles away from the truck with a pack to drag back with me as well.

Solomon Amphibs, sometimes, like rocky PA trails, with Superfeet insoles. My feet break out if I wear closed shoes.

Anything thats comfortable - we have 6 year old Lowa GTX Mids and of course our old military boots (highs). Keen sandals for short trips and sometimes barefoot just for fun.

I'm still wearing my GI jungle boots and wool socks. I carry an extra pair of socks.

Another vote for Moab ventilators- low cut and non waterproof. Paired with darn tough socks. My feet have never given me any issues.

Never had much luck with Merrill. Lately I've been using Salomons and my favorites have been the XT Wings series. I am currently using the Fellraisers but haven't hiked enough to make a recommendation yet.

For trail maintenance and heavy bushwacking I still use combat boots.

I'm using Salomon Amphibs because of their light weight and great ventilation. My feet just don't like being closed up, so much so that I go barefoot or wear sandals as much as I can, even during New England winters. For tough or very rocky trails, I add Superfeet insoles.

Wellco desert boot... Browning hunting socks (thickness varies on season/weather).. and I keep a pair of cheap surf mocs around for camp wear during Spring/Summer and Cabelas' plush pile booties to wear during Fall/Winter.

Salomon XT as well. I'd buy them again.

I'm a fan of trail running shoes vs boots. I like the Speedcross 3's for Tough Mudder type runs, but prefer Solomon XT's for hiking. I wanted to like the Altras, but the toe box actually proved to be too wide for me.YMMV

I have a pair of LaFuma high tops, they came from a guy who worked for some outdoor magazine and had them sitting in his closet. For $25 bucks they have been super awesome. Using wrightsocks double layer hiking sock. These socks are awesome. They make all my shoes more comfortable.

I have a nice pair of trail runners but I can't get myself to take them backpacking. The super-low cut has me thinking they'll get all kinds of gravel and junk in them. I guess it depends on the type of terrain, though.

I have a 3-year-old pair of leather Merrell mid boots (forget the model name) I just can't give up...but I know their end is coming soon.

Felt the same way about the last pair of MOABs. Wore 'em every dang day for over two years and didn't cut loose of them (for another pair) until I could feel cold wind on my toes last November----

I tried ventilators, but my feet kind of slip. I also hiked in Teva Churn's (water shoes) for so long that the ventilators feel like bricks on my feet. I bought them though, so I'm going to try and get used to them and see what happens.

As long as the boot / shoe has a decent toe cap, I'm good. I have the aptitude to find hidden rocks / logs / cut down saplings while hiking.
