Re: 7th Annual Texas Butt Bake

Certain peoples in my family cannot fathom why I look forward to this event every year...but I'm the one going, not them :-) I did miss my mountain trip this year, but I will schedule time off in October to do that trip in style. Can't wait for the food, fun and fellowship in the refreshing, humid, ...

New Use for Amsteel and Whoopie Slings

New Use for Amsteel and Whoopie Slings I’ve put together a new way to use Amsteel! I made whoopie sling lane lines and supports for my paddleboard class at the local pool. Modified whoopie with pulley knots.jpg Paddle boards, which are actually 8x3' hard inflated exercise platforms that you suspend ...

Re: Custom for the Texas Fall Hang.

A picture of the winner, TJ, my son Wesley's Mechanical Engineering classmate at BU. We hooked it up for him along with his other friend and they slept both for the first time in hammocks on Saturday night at the Fairfield Hang. TJ was hugely impressed, it helped we had temps in the 60s over night! ...

Re: Camping with cats

Being owned by a couple of cats myself, I saw a video or a trip report somewhere, not necessarily this website: https://www.backpacker.com/skills/take-a-cat-backpacking but it was all about letting your cat lead the way. Maybe if you had one that was panther-sized so it wouldn't get eaten! Mine like...

Re: Ideal Camping Vehicle for Hammocking and Backpacking

Well,

I went with this one:
Subaru Forester 2.5i: Still enough of a car, but a little bit of a beefier ride than the Legacy, and I can tow a small, (really small) trailer. Yeah, USAA is the bomb.

Re: Ideal Camping Vehicle for Hammocking and Backpacking

Most important question, what is your budget? Yeah, I am looking to find something that can be around the 18K price range. (Dreaming.) Tacoma looks good. I'm going to look at a Jeep Liberty today, only because it is a pretty good looking deal. (Just empty every pocket) Those military deals are temp...

Ideal Camping Vehicle for Hammocking and Backpacking

It looks like I'm going to need to replace my Buick Enclave due to the possibility of major mechanical failure being imminent. So, I'm looking for the ideal vehicle to be a 1) daily driver, 2)camping accessory, 3)extended off-road trip ability and 4) a base camp for backpacking. I might even think a...

Water Treatment for Hikers, Vol. 2 – Water Treatment Methods

Good article series!

I plan to provide a "tree prize" solution for the Texas Fairfield Group Hang that I'm working on to solve help with the difficulty in extracting water for filtering from shallow areas. Sort of a redneck version of the MSR trailshot. Stay tuned...

Re: The "Turn Over" cover.

That's pretty nifty! I am a firm believer that shock cord is a vital DIY supply :) I have found myself using a reflective "survival" tarp, the one with aluminized reflector and waterproof vinyl on each side as an over cover. I will drape that over the ridge line, and use a binder clip, or whatever, ...

Re: REI presentation on elevated camping "hammock camping"

The music festival comment caught me, besides the other stuff about lack of experiential knowledge regarding hammock camping. I have seen a trend on certain websites, like reddit, instagram and imgur of hammocks being used for photo ops and trendy stunts. Less of this is about hammock camping, which...
