Re: Hammock Stand

I got one that looks like it's similar to that. It works for most of my hammocks, but some are pretty close to the floor when loaded. I don't use a ridgeline when I use stands like these. If I do, I rig it to the stand itself, and not the hammock. I also took out the J hook and replaced it with and ...

Re: It's (record)cold up north! Anyone on this site up there hangin?

Yes, I think that's my all time low. We don't usually get too much colder than that up here. There have been a few times over the years that it was below zero, but not for long. I was out in a similar temperature but with wind and a winter tarp, and I also hung a small lap quilt on the ridgeline, wh...

Re: It's (record)cold up north! Anyone on this site up there hangin?

I was out last night. 23 F and thankfully, there was no wind. I had my down UQ and I also had the snugpak UQ just in case, because I wasn't sure I was ready for the cold. It was 50 on the overnight just last weekend. It was clear and I wasn't using a tarp, and I was just chilled enough that I decide...

Re: Hammock Repair

Agreed, Gorilla tape and a material patch may be the only way to help it. Gorilla tape is probably not necessary, but if you have it, what the heck. In any event run a double or triple stitch around the edge, but not much more. The more holes you put (with a sewing machine), the more likely it will ...

Re: Dang it's hot out here!

Wow, I've got to hand it to you guys. I'd rather go out in five below than that kind of heat. Is everybody using some type of nylon hammock in that kind of heat still? I had one over-nighter last year when we had close to 100 during the day and only in the 80s at night, and it was uncomfortable. The...

Re: First hang with Whoopies

Hate to change the subject, but where is a good place to get amsteel, looking for 1/8 inch, ripstop and dutchwae are not consistent with this cordage. Try https://www.facebook.com/CastoTrading/ They're out of Georgia and they sell on ebay, too. They sometimes sell amsteel and their prices are good....

Re: New Forum dedicated to heavyweight camping

When I car camp, I pack my backpack as if for a hike so that I am totally self contained, then I put everything else I own in the truck. Sounds like we have the same trip planner. Music to my ears. I TRY, every time to figure out what I really need, but end up packing the backpack, but by the time ...

Re: Bling is for the birds!!!

I love mule tape. The strength for weight is so good, and cost can be close to zero if you are lucky, so you don't have to worry about replacing it as often as you need if you abuse it. It takes knots well. So far the only drawback I've seen is that it's white, but that doesn't last long.

Re: Bling is for the birds!!!

A voice of reason! I've been waiting for someone to show me a really good reason to spend that kind of money on hardware. I can't disagree with the wow factor, but I can't justify the cost. I'd rather spend that money on airfare to go to a really cool place. I agree with spending the money on lines,...

Re: I SOOOO wish this forum was more crowded...

Boy, I'd love to figure out a way to come to one of the Texas hangs. I guess I have to retire first, so timing isn't an issue. I've only been to Texas twice, but loved everywhere I got to visit. Well, all except that one spot that was loaded with rattlers.

Re: I SOOOO wish this forum was more crowded...

It is sort of refreshing to not have cyber nannies watching over you. No one cares where you got your stuff, we just appreciate being outdoors no matter what you use to get there. That's my number one reason for being here. I don't post as much as some, but I read a lot to keep up on new ideas. My ...

Re: Hanging off the luggage rack.

I've only done it once, and I looped a tree strap around the opposite side of the car between the front and back doors. Then I threw the loop over the top of the car and attached myself to it. I figured that spot on the frame is probably a little bit reinforced. I didn't really trust the rack to hol...

Re: 30 Degree Underquilt Giveaway

Great way to get new members to check out the other side. Lots of fun to be had here. It's been a busy summer and I haven't needed an UQ at all, but fall is coming up and the sleeping bag I'm laying on is starting to feel chilly towards morning ;) Thanks for your generosity!

Re: VIDEO: 1000 Subscriber Gear Giveaway

Have you come up with a good way to organize all your parts and pieces, along with all the stuff you are tweaking and evaluating? A video of a good system would be interesting. You should see my junk room. I can't decide how to handle it all. I'm always digging for some lost part that I need....
